As the Temperatures Rise, So Will the Hemlines

As the Temperatures Rise, So Will the Hemlines
By Nicole Hale

Charlotte, NC has been experiencing some frigid forecasts the past month leaving most of its inhabitants bundled up in binding layers of winter attire. But fear not Charlotteans; soon enough spring will be upon us (I mean, check out today's spring like temperatures), and the pretty palettes of periwinkle and robin’s egg will fill the streets. As inviting and wistful as this may sound, it brings a potentially lethal question to the table:

How does your spring wardrobe look?

I know what you all are thinking….yikes! Between wanting to lose those last five pounds and worrying about the unsightly look of your see through legs, you haven’t enough thought about your clothes yet. Or maybe your thinking, Spring Clothes?! It’s only February! Here’s some advice, do not procrastinate. We all know how fast the latest season’s fashions sneak up on the unknowing mass consumers. Just as soon as they roll into the local boutiques and department stores, they roll on out into that woman in your office’s closet who always strolls on in with her new patent leather croc Marc Jacobs tote and her $700 black peep toe Manolo Blahnik pumps. I can sense your eyes rolling.

So, here’s the plan. This spring, beat her to the punch. Whether you have the money to dish on the latest designer spring collections or you’re more on a budget, it’s all about knowing where to look and knowing what you’re looking for. Follow some of these current trends and hit up some of these local Charlotte Boutiques and you are sure to look chic, $1500 or not.

Spring 2009 Trends

The Great Depression: Here comes the dainty, depressed look of tiered layers and sack dresses. How appropriate.

A-Listers: Beauty in all its glamour shows up all over the runways. Sleek, Grecian style dress with draping waves and bedazzling jewels flow.

Eastern Inspiration: Vibrant colors, slouchy parachute pants and sleek jumpsuits are also among a hot addition to the spring collections. Turbans are really paving the way for themselves this season.

Oh The Eighties: Nope, it’s not over folks. Lace and distressed ripped denim is still hot and doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere any time soon.

Oversized and Disproportioned: Folds, twists and turns exude out of spring frocks. Asymmetrical, oversized sleeves and cutouts also entail this trend.
